Oral Cancer Signs & Symptoms

No one wants to hear the word “cancer” when it comes to talking about their health. As dental professionals, we’re focused mainly on oral cancer, and we work hard to help our patients avoid it. Aside from oral cancer screenings at Hillstream Dental, one of the ways we do this is by teaching people about its common signs. That way, individuals can help spot the cancer quickly. This is important because oral cancer is considered highly curable when treated early! Here are some oral cancer symptoms you should keep an eye out for.

Visual Signs

When it comes to visual signs of oral cancer, you should be on the lookout for white or reddish patches inside your mouth. These patches can appear on the gums, tongue, tonsils, or mouth lining. You should also check for any lip or mouth sores that don’t seem to heal. This would be opposed to canker sores which heal in about two weeks or so. Another symptom that can present itself is a lump inside your mouth or a thickening in your cheek.

Different Sensations

Aside from these visual cues, make note of any change in feeling with your mouth. For example, if it feels more difficult to swallow, chew, move your jaw, or move your tongue, that might signal an oral health issue. Persistent mouth pain in your teeth or jaw, or numbness in any part of your mouth are both potential signs of oral cancer as well.
