How Fluoride & Dental Sealants Can Prevent Cavities

Tooth decay occurs when sugar-eating bacteria produce acid. This acid breaks down your tooth enamel, creating holes known as cavities. While cavities are treatable, it’s better to prevent them in the first place. At Hillstream Dental, we use fluoride and dental sealants to help protect your smile.

What Is Fluoride?

Fluoride is a mineral found in natural sources like rocks and soil. In the 1930s, researchers made a big discovery. Children who drank water with naturally-occurring fluoride had less tooth decay. More studies showed that adding fluoride to a water supply reduced rates of cavities! Organizations like The American Dental Association recommend fluoride for preventing tooth decay. At our practice, we offer fluoride treatment after cleanings. It’s given in the form of a mouth rinse, gel, or foam. If you are at risk for decay, fluoride is an easy way to protect your teeth.

What Are Dental Sealants?

Your back teeth, called molars, have grooves in them. These crevices can be deep and hard to clean. Bacteria and plaque collect in the spaces, leading to decay. Dental sealants are a great way to guard against cavities. The sealant consists of a thin coating of plastic material that bonds to your teeth. On permanent molars, sealants can reduce the risk of cavities by up to 80%! Dental sealants are most often given to children as soon as their permanent teeth come in. However, they can benefit adult teeth as well.
