Despite the advancement of dental technology, tooth decay continues to affect the oral health of many patients of all ages due to eating and lifestyle habits. Tooth enamel is tough stuff, but failure to remove leftover food or consuming sweets can wear away enamel and cause tooth decay. But, at what point does a tooth with decay need to be removed?

Tooth Extractions

Like you, dental professionals prefer for you to keep your natural teeth for as long as possible. However, there comes a point when decay or other dental issues can present tooth extraction as a solution or leave tooth extraction as the only treatment option. Fortunately, tooth extractions are a common dental procedure that bring health back to your smile.

Stages of Tooth Decay

There are five stages of tooth decay. The first stage is when the tooth shows slight signs of attack from sugar and acid on the surface of the enamel. The second stage is when the enamel is fully attacked and starts to erode. You’ll likely feel sensitivity or pain after the second stage. Stage three consists of bacteria eating away the dentin. Once the decay has gone past the dentin and reaches the pulp, more aggressive restorative treatments are proposed rather than a simple composite filling. Stages four and five involve infection of the pulp and root.

Tooth Extractions for Tooth Decay

Infection of the pulp and root of the tooth begins to impact the tooth’s structure. Typically, swelling, pain, abscess, discoloration, and other uncomfortable conditions are correlated with the severe stages of a cavity. When the tooth has reached this point, a tooth extraction due to decay is likely.
