Temporomandibular Joint Treatment In Rochester, MI

Your temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the joint that connects your jaw to your skull at the point directly in front of your ears. Your TMJ is used in chewing, talking, and yawning and is responsible for being able to move your jaw up and down and side to side. From time to time, this very important joint can start to have some problems with the joint and the muscles that connect and surround it. These problems are symptoms of what is called a temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD) and can be very painful and debilitating.

The Causes Of TMDs

There are many causes of TMDs that can cause pain in both the jaw joint and the muscles that attach to it and surround it. Some of those causes include:

  • Grinding your teeth, perhaps the main cause of problems with your TMJ. Grinding your teeth puts a lot of pressure on the joint which can eventually lead to future problems.
  • Injuries like whiplash or other injuries to the head or neck area. These type of injuries are in the area of your jaw and can have a great effect on your jaw joint and jaw muscles.
  • Arthritis in the joint can bring about a great deal of pain and discomfort.
  • Stress, a main cause for having problems with the muscles that surround your jaw joint. If you are stressed and tend to clench your jaw muscle because of it, you are at risk of having TMD.
  • Problems with the ball and socket of the joint.

Knowing You Have TMD

Only you know if you are having pain or discomfort that centers around your TMJ. If you think you have TMD, make an appointment to have it diagnosed and repaired as soon as possible. Some of the symptoms of TMD are:

  • Pain that occurs when you open your mouth wide.
  • Your jaw locking into a certain position to where you cannot move it freely.
  • Swelling that occurs around your jaw joint.
  • Your face muscles feeling tired.
  • The feeling that your upper and lower teeth aren’t aligned properly.
  • A popping or grinding noise that occurs when you open and close your mouth.
  • Headaches, neck aches, or shoulder pain.

If you wait to get any of these problems checked out, it will lead to larger problems and greater pain.

Ways To Treat TMD In Rochester, MI

At Hubbard & Leath Dental, our most common form of treatment is to give you a mouthguard or splint to wear at home. These mouthpieces fit perfectly over your top and/or bottom teeth to keep them from making contact with each other. This takes away the possibility of you grinding or clenching your teeth. If your TMJ is beyond the point of a mouthguard helping, then we will take further steps to treat your TMD. We are here for you and your family at Hubbard & Leath Dental.
