Teeth Extraction

Tooth Extraction At Hubbard & Leath Dental

Your permanent teeth are meant to last a lifetime. However, there are many reasons they wouldn’t, and it’s common to have to have a tooth extracted. The most common reason a tooth needs to be extracted is because it is damaged, cracked, broken, or decayed beyond repair. Keeping a tooth with these problems will not only compromise your smile but in some cases it also will have a direct effect on your health.

Other reasons a tooth may need to be extracted include:

  • Having a crowded mouth. If your teeth are becoming crowded in your mouth to the point where it is becoming a painful inconvenience, one or more teeth may need to be extracted. In some cases, your mouth may be too small for all your teeth to fit properly, and some teeth may need to be extracted to prepare for orthodontic work. Also, a tooth that hasn’t erupted through the gums may need to extracted if it will cause a crowding problem when it eventually breaks through.
  • If a tooth is infected. If the infection of the tooth goes deep enough into the center of the tooth to the point where a root canal or antibiotics won’t fix it, the tooth will need to be extracted.
  • If you have severe gum disease. When you have severe gum disease, it affects not only the gums that surround the tooth, but it also affects the bone. If the gums and bone are affected enough to where a tooth becomes loose, it may need to be extracted.
  • If there is a risk of infection. In some cases, a person’s immune system may be weak, and the risk of infection may be enough to extract a tooth.

What To Let Us Know Before Having A Tooth Extraction Procedure

A tooth extraction procedure is normally a low-risk treatment. However, when a tooth is removed, the risk of infection becomes higher because of the possible exposure of the bloodstream to bacteria through an open wound. If you are at a higher risk for developing an infection, you must tell us before the procedure so we can have the proper medication ready before we perform your tooth extraction. We will also want to know your complete medical history that includes medications you take and if you have a manmade heart valve, a heart defect, liver disease, a replaced joint, an impaired immune system, or bacterial endocarditis.

Post-Extraction Instructions

After your extraction, you will need to rest for a few days and follow some easy guidelines that can help speed up the healing process. To help minimize your healing time, you should take your prescription given to you by your dentist, put ice on the affected area to reduce swelling, eat soft foods, do not brush the area of the extracted tooth, and avoid spitting and smoking.

Also, after extraction, you have several tooth replacement options to choose from such as implants, dentures, and bridges. You’ll be confident in your smile after receiving one of our tooth replacement options!
